Verb Tense Consistency

Tense consistency involves ensuring that verbs in a sentence or paragraph accurately reflect the time frame of events. Part 6 often tests this across multiple sentences.

Rules

  1. Identify time markers (yesterday, next week, currently) to determine the correct tense.
  2. Use the present perfect (has/have + past participle) for actions starting in the past and continuing to the present.
  3. Use the past perfect (had + past participle) for an action completed before another past action.
  4. Maintain consistent tenses unless a time marker indicates a shift.

Examples

"By the time the manager arrived, the meeting had already started."

The past perfect 'had started' shows this action happened before the past action 'arrived'.

"The company has increased its market share significantly since 2020."

The present perfect 'has increased' is used with 'since' to connect the past to the present.

"Next year, we will launch a new line of eco-friendly products."

The future tense 'will launch' matches the time marker 'Next year'.

What TOEIC specifically tests

  • Using the simple past instead of the present perfect with 'since' or 'for'.
  • Using the present tense to describe a completed past action.
  • Failing to notice the sequence of events requiring the past perfect.

Common questions

When should I use the present perfect?

Use it for actions that started in the past and continue to the present, or for past actions with a result relevant now. Look for keywords like 'since', 'for', 'recently', and 'lately'.

How is tense tested in Part 6?

In Part 6, the time marker might be in a previous sentence, requiring you to understand the context of the entire paragraph to choose the correct tense.
