TOEIC Part 1 — Photographs
TOEIC Part 1 presents six photographs, each followed by four spoken statements. The test taker selects the statement that best describes the photo. It is the shortest part of the test and serves as a warm-up — but it has a hidden ceiling effect: a single error here can keep an otherwise strong listener below 950.
Format
Audio plays once. Photo is visible in the test booklet (paper) or on screen (digital). Statements are spoken at conversational speed by one speaker. Total time: under 6 minutes.
Common pitfalls at the 600–800 band
- Similar-sound distractors. Statements often pair a real action in the photo with one or two distractors whose verbs sound similar to the correct verb. Test takers who guess from a single keyword frequently fall for these.
- Setting-vs-action confusion. Distractors sometimes describe the setting (office, street, kitchen) accurately but state an action that is not occurring. Correct answers require both setting and action to match.
- Plural-vs-singular subject errors. A photo of multiple people may be paired with a distractor that uses a singular pronoun, or vice versa. Test takers under time pressure miss the count cue.
High-scorer strategy
- Look at the photo before audio plays. Identify the subject, action, and setting in advance — what's happening, who is doing it, where.
- Reject any statement whose subject doesn't match the photo, even if the verb and object are plausible. Subject mismatch is the most reliable elimination signal.
- Don't second-guess after the audio ends. Part 1 rewards quick decisions; revisiting often turns a correct first choice into a wrong second choice.
Common questions about TOEIC Part 1
How many questions are in TOEIC Part 1?
TOEIC Part 1 contains six questions, each tied to a single photograph. It is the shortest part of the Listening section.
Is TOEIC Part 1 easy?
TOEIC Part 1 is the easiest part on average — test takers at all score bands answer it with high accuracy. The difficulty comes from a ceiling effect at the top end: a single Part 1 error can prevent an otherwise 950-level test taker from reaching their target.
Can I see the photos before the audio plays?
Yes. The photos are visible from the start of the section, and test takers are expected to scan them before the audio for each question begins. Identifying the subject, action, and setting in advance is the most effective Part 1 strategy.
